Book kids with books
SO, THE era of the ordinary storybook seems over. They don't come drab any more. The strait-laced book has metamorphosed into an exciting range for kids. For kids?
Paediatrician dentist, Dr Somy Mathew was busy flipping through books at the ongoing Juniors Book Exhibition sale at Exhibito Hall, Ravipuram, in the city. Said the dentist; " I am basically looking for musical books for kids who come to the clinic." And books, musical or otherwise, are there in plenty, especially for the 0-12 age group.
Said Archana Vikram, proprietor of the Juniors store, who got up the exhibition, " The exhibition at this scale overcomes the limitation of a book section at our store. We have sourced the books from the importers directly and passed on the benefit to the buyers."
Prices for books, CDs, games and toys are therefore related to the direct import and are consequently free of added surcharges. Bathtub books for infants and toddlers are there to make bathing both a learning and fun experience. In fact, most books aim at making reading fun filled, just as they mask routine learning in colourful pages and intelligent activity.
The cookie book with rolling pins, cutters and simple instructions is for the young cook, just as a pottery kit has mould, clay and a 32-page instruction book. A puppet theatre set with three puppets and instructions is yet another interesting activity kit for children. Posters of the alphabet, maps, numbers in big print and font are ideal for playschools, schools and kids rooms. Measuring tables, tables, shapes, sizes, colours are perfect books for beginners. Various book accompaniments, like bookends and albums are there in plenty.
Of course in all this dazzle of new products the complete collection of Winnie the Pooh, Enid Blyton's Mystery collection, Faraway collection and the excellent compilation of encyclopaedias make the sale a complete book affair but with a difference.
The choice is wide and interesting so much so that when three 12-year-olds were queried as to their favourite book, they brought one which read, `How not to embarrass your kids. 250 Don'ts for parents of teens'!
The book fair is on till May 30.
