INDIANISATION OF the all-American fast foods began over a decade ago with the arrival of multinational food chains such as KFC. Judging by the way we are lapping up the fare that these fast food restaurants offer, it comes as no surprise that Bangalore now has another global food chain here Marrybrown.
Marrybrown is a Malaysian chain started by the MGM Group in 1981. Having a vast presence in the Asia-Pacific region, the Marrybrown chain came to India over four years ago when it opened a restaurant in Chennai. Today, the group has six franchisees and 10 restaurants in South India.
A wonderful place for children, the restaurant recently opened on Brigade Road is special, for it offers a playpen where kids can really let their hair down. With fried chicken and burgers being the core food products, Marrybrown is every urban middleclass child's dream eat-out. The store promises a dessert counter and jukebox very soon, and offers children collectibles like stuffed toys. What's more, it has a chipmunk (the mascot) to enthral them.
Serving customers a range of burgers and other eats that your taste buds would be accustomed to at places such as KFC, Marrybrown claims that it has "localised" its meals to suit Indian tastes. There are three categories of meals vegetarian, chicken, and fish for those who prefer their rice and gravy, which come accompanied by salad and papad too.
Those with more global tastes can choose from a range of burgers. There's the salad burger for the health conscious, and vegetarian options of burgers with either a vegetable patty or a spicy potato patty. There are fillet burgers for those who love their meats either fish or chicken. The Marrybrown special hotouch burger contains pieces of the famous fried chicken. Priced between Rs. 50 and Rs. 60, the burgers are tasty but could contain some more fillings besides the dressing and patty.
The short eats are a delight with chicken muncheez, vegetable nuggets (six pieces), and fried chicken (Rs. 35). Fish 'n' chips, that is served with two pieces of fish fillet (seer fish coated with batter and fried), coleslaw salad, and French fries, is a must-have. Marrybrown also offers a farm salad, besides the coleslaw. The potato smileys are just right too crisp on the outside and delightfully soft inside. In servings of six, they are a hit with most children. So is the kids' meal, offered in a box (at Rs. 70). This comes in vegetarian and chicken options and includes a burger, fries, and a small milkshake in flavours of chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla.
The dessert counter will soon offer a wide range. For now, it offers brownies, ice-creams, jumbo sundaes, and Irish coffee.
Marrybrown also serves meal combinations such as magic meal, mega meal, and merry meal for birthday parties where the chipmunk makes an appearance.
