For a vegan variety
Try out Jack `n' Jill for a vegetarian experience
ONE CAN be adventurous, but some culinary connotation is essential to name any restaurant even if it is only a remote reference. Jack `n' Jill (Ahuja Estate, opposite Santosh Sapna theatre, Abids) is one odd exception.
Daubed in canary yellow and white, the newly opened restaurant dishes out pure vegetarian fare at reasonable rates. Nearly everything costs less than Rs. 70 in this brightly lit eatery. Although Jack `n' Jill is touted a multi-cuisine restaurant, one can only find a dominating North Indian presence in the menu with traces of Chinese here and there.
Chinese beer begins the menu. Mineral water is Rs. 15, and you had better buy one for water is a scarce commodity, not always served here!
Vichyssoise soup is an aromatically flavoured stew that you can spend some time on. And you may even start liking it to build your appetite slowly. Alternatively, there is always the dependable Tomato dhaniya shorba, Makai palak shorba, steaming hot Lemon coriander soup or Vegetable hot & sour soup. The principal-director of Greenfields College of Catering & Hotel Management, V. K. Gupta who doubles up as an executive chef at Jack `n' Jill during evenings, strongly recommends the Vegetable Canapé and Cheese Roll to start with.
Among other starters are the Paneer Tikka Haryali, Vegetable Shashlik and Aachari Khazana.
Curries served do not appear to be very Atkins-friendly with generous toppings of butter, cheese cream or nuts for garnishing. In the `kuch khas' (something special)-assortment, although there is nothing special to be mentioned in particular, Nilgiri Khorma is one exotic combination of Indian herbs and spices with fresh vegetables that is worth a try.
The Basmati Khazane Se section offers the regular Biriyani and Pulao, while the bread basket assortment is hardly remarkable. Sundaes, particularly, the Tuti Fruti may remind one of a certain market in Old City.
Jack `n' Jill is situated strategically so that whenever you are at a movie next door you can snatch a quick bite, only if you must.
