Grills and turtles
The blue sea and a scrumptious spread is what Fisherman Cove's Barbeque By The Sea is all about
Visit the Covelong Beach on a Friday night and you will watch wisps of ochre speckle a star-spangled sky as chefs merrily sauté prawn frittata, songsters render soulful numbers, silver moonbeams float freely on whiskey-dark waters and turtles trot out and ask tartly what the fuss is all about. This is not hyperbole, but a factual account of Fisherman Cove's "Barbeque By The Sea" fare.
A fish escalope winks wantonly from under the dew-kissed covers of fresh herbs, while a spicy chicken luxuriates in the company of thyme, dried onion, dried paprika and cayenne pepper. Born of beer-flavoured rice, a paella sits in colourful clothes sewn from grilled Mediterranean vegetables. You do not need a powerful nose to recognise that the paella has just stepped out of a self-indulgent bath in basil pesto. Fighting fiercely for the rest of the space are a grilled crab, a flame-seared mackerel and a sizzling lamb steak.
After a spicy meal has added inches to our frames, an interested few totter down the beach hoping to clap eyes on turtles and turtle eggs. The turtle walk is led by the Fishermen Cove's "turtle talker" Patrick. Even as the sea listlessly foams and dies at your feet, you let your eyes glide over scurrying white and red crabs. Patrick's understudy, a local fisherman, speaks in exclamations about these crabs. For a second, you wonder if it is actually a `crab walk' that you are on. You walk and walk till your knees turn to jelly. Crawling like a turtle, you look up wearily and ask feebly, "How long more do we have to walk?" With arms folded squarely across his chest, Patrick thunders, "Till you see a turtle!" At the end of the haul, we see a dead turtle on our path. Patrick feels that the walk has not been in vain and we head back to the barbecue site.
A note. If you want to go on a turtle walk after a barbeque meal, you need to have communicated this wish to the management well in advance.
