Subhash Babulkar's paintings revolve around simple subjects
THE SUBJECTS are simple and everyday a man and woman peering at a newspaper, a mother combing a daughter's hair, girls gossiping on a park bench Nagpur-based artist Subhash Babulkar says his inspiration is the ordinary and the routine.
The faces of all his characters are similar and familiar; large, sometimes hooded eyes, prominent noses and vaguely morose expressions on their faces. Contemplative is what the artist would term them, though. The backdrops against which he sets his men women and children are interestingly textured; some outside brightly painted houses, some in living and dining rooms, some flying kites, and some in coffee shops. The chiaroscuro in his backgrounds are fascinating perfectly blended yet seemingly independent shades of red, green, blue and yellow.
The exhibition is on till February 16, 10.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. at Launch Pad, Chhotabhai Centre, 140 Nungambakkam High Road, ph: 9884191111.
