Diamonds, a girl's best friend
If all those advertisements hadn't persuaded you to buy a real `rock' till now, it's time you did a rethink. Diamonds are the hottest thing in town these days.
REMEMBER THE song, Diamonds are a girl's best friend? These days diamonds are, indeed, the best friends for many a women in the city.
A few years ago, people were wary about wearing precious stones. These days, jewellery shopping in the city has gradually veered towards diamonds. Earlier, only American diamonds were easily affordable. These were available in all possible hues and shapes.
Diamonds were a rarity, seen only in the nose rings and earrings worn by Brahmin women. Today, chances are that if you see a set of glimmering white stones, they would be the `real' things, the `rocks'!
"People buy diamonds as a long-term investment. If you buy a diamond today and sell it 10 years later, you get more money than what you spent initially," says Jaya Govindan of Bhima Jewellery. Diamond set jewellery has become a necessary part of a bride's trousseau.
Jewellers say that diamond jewellery finds the most takers in Thiruvananthapuram. Earlier, people believed that a damaged diamond would bring bad luck to the wearer. It is a notion that Jaya Govindan puts to rest: "We buy our diamonds from De Beers directly and check each stone that we buy and sell. We don't sell damaged diamonds; if it is bad for the wearer, it will be bad for the person who sells it as well."
Set in delicate designs, diamond necklaces cost around Rs. 1.5 lakh. Chunky jewellery with diamonds would cost many a lakh. The current jewellery trends indicate that delicate designs are in vogue.
Though diamonds look good when set in a `white' background, most people prefer diamonds to be set in `yellow' gold.
Besides diamonds, jewellery encrusted with rubies and sapphires along with diamonds is also a hot favourite among women. Rubies and diamonds are the most sought after combination.
If eight and 10-carat diamonds dominate the high-end of the market, brands such as Oyzterbay constitute the affordable end.
The Oyzterbay brand has delicate designs set with the `blink-and-you miss' kind of tiny diamonds.
The more elaborate ones are priced around Rs. 20,000. Pendants and earrings with the casual look are also fast moving. These are ideal for being gifted on Valentine's Day.
The prices for these are in the range of Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 30,000.
The commercial for Nakshatra diamond, featuring the ethereal looking Aishwarya Rai, is tempting many a person to invest in diamonds.
