Augustine Devotta's canvases combine commerce with aesthetics
Corporate management, corporate dressing, corporate interiors and now, corporate paintings.
This new age catchword is what Augustine Devotta's oil on canvas (displayed at the Vinyasa Art Gallery till January 16) is all about corporate themes in colour.
An advertising professional, the artist's brush with business principles began during his interaction with various clients, particularly Marito Corporation, the people behind the show.
With the company executive being the central character in most frames, the colour blue dominates. It is combined with bright hues of red, orange, yellow and shades of mellow brown. The artist allows the viewers the freedom to interpret each canvas. But the message comes through in Augustine's no-frills frames. His ideas are innovative and the images, uncomplicated. So a team of company staff joining hands may be to show that success lies in shouldering responsibility. Another team playing various instruments depicts harmony at the workplace. In one of the canvases an executive, rather a manager, is shown bearing the weight of a large key, while another features a weighing scale with groups of people reflecting that quality matters and not quantity. Then there's a huge hand pointing to a path conveying that right guidance matters. These are just a few of the success formulae on frame.
A self-taught artist, painting has been Augustine's passion since childhood. He was motivated to pursue his skills seriously by Rev. Fr. Thamburaj SJ, principal and one of the founders of the School of Visual Communication, Loyola College.
Augustine's thematic work will not just add colour to corporate offices but also splash across meaningful messages.
