Students in the twin cities are all set to participate in the forthcoming Saarang 2004, at IIT Madras between January 21 and 26
|
ALL ROADS lead to IIT Madras for Saarang 2004, the mother-of-all fetes and a campus event to die for. Like the previous fests, Saarang' 04 (January 21-26) that was started in 1975 as Mardi Gras, promises to pack in a lot of literary events, informals and of course those hi-adrenalin pro shows. Students from the twin cities are all eager to take the train down south where a plethora of workshops, dramatics, ramp shows, creative writing, elocution, scrabble apart from the Reality Show (on the lines of TV shows), Choreo and Power Chord, choreography and rock competitions respectively awaits them.
"I would be participating in JAM and informals such as Dumb Charades," says Pratap, a final year ECE student from CBIT. "Quizzing at Saarang is hi-funda. People who come for conducting the quiz as well as the participants are core quizzers. Its real fun to watch the IIT and IIM students fight it out. But there is nothing to beat the live shows," he adds. He is participating there for the second time and this time apart from the competitions he is looking forward to the Unity Concert featuring the Pakistani band Strings and the Indian counterpart Euphoria, slated for the January 26.
Gigs featuring Pin Drop Violence and Mother Jane and more comprise the professional shows that would be held every evening during the fest. "All the live shows are ticketed, the tickets will be available at the venue," says Arun, III year Civil Engineering student, IIT Madras, professional events coordinator Saarang'04.
As regards participation in other events, "we have already given pre invites to the principals of various colleges. Also students can register online at our URL www.saarang.org. As for the accommodation, outstation students will be housed in the IIT hostel and we have a hospitality wing which will take care of the pick up from the railway station," says Hemanth, II year Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, coordinator Saarang'04.
Students from the twin cities feel that the visit would also help in getting ideas to organise their own college fests back home, mostly slated around March such as Euphoria, Shruti and others. "The standards of Saarang or the recently held Mood Indigo (IIT Mumbai) are far high when compared to the fests we have in the twin cities. We do plan to incorporate some elements in our forthcoming fest," says Ramakant D, II year Computer Science, Vasavi College of Engineering. But for now, get yourself a berth on the train and get set go for the fun filled fete not forgetting the booty that you can probably bring back with the trophies as the prize money.
More than winning Saarang is sure going to be one learning experience, of interacting with rest of the student fraternity from all over the country that would be descending there for the six-day fare. Some of the events that would be held as part of the fest are:
January 21: Classical music concert
January 22: Western music solo, India quiz, Antakshari, sports quiz, light music concert
January 23:Power Chord, What's the good word, entertainment quiz, scrabble, Choreo Nite
January 24: Extempore, Pot pourrie, classical music vocals, cleudo, Just a Minute
January 25: Crossie, dramatics, business quiz, rock show
January 26: The Reality Show, India quiz finals and The Unity Concert
For details you can log into the official festival website www.saarang.org or contact cultural secretary (Lit), IIT M on 098841-87145 or cultural secretary (Arts) on 098401-01885.
