Square One Talents, at Pattom, is a beauty salon, boutique, snack bar as well as takeaway.
BEING THE name of a store, Square One Talents, does not convey much. It could be almost anything.
"The idea behind the store was to make use of the talents of the members of our family," says Mary George of Square One Talents.
Square One Talents is the sister concern of a dental clinic in the city. "We, housewives, wanted to do something productive during our spare time," says Alisha Rajan.
The store has a beauty parlour, a `tea club' and a boutique. It also sells snacks and pickles. The `beauty club' at Square One Talents provides personalised beauty treatment and consultation. "We call it the `club' because it is different from the other parlours in the city. I don't leave my clients to assistants, but attend to them personally," says Rekha, beautician.
The boutique, Needle `N Thread, stocks embroidered saris, salwar-kurta sets and dresses for babies. The boutique specialises in hand-painted saris. The shop also stocks crepes, georgettes, organza, organdy, embroidered Kancheepuram and Kerala saris.
Shadow work, appliqué and cut work embellishment with crystals are also undertaken. The price of the ensemble depends on the fabric and the amount or kind of work. The prices start at Rs. 500.
Baby frocks, christening sets, bibs and socks are also available here, and are designed according to the customer's requirement. The prices begin at Rs. 50.
Bed linen, cushion covers, curtains, table linen and table mats in beautiful designs and a variety of colour combinations are on display. Embroidery and appliqué-worked home décor items are also available. The prices start at Rs. 650.
The store also undertakes car decorations and supply of bridal bouquets.
Pickles, jam, chutneys and cakes are the most unlikely things one would expect to find in a boutique or beauty salon. But then, Square One Talent, is different. Pickles made of nutmeg, mango and ginger, fish, gooseberry, and garlic are available. "Nutmeg is good for the heart and prevents high cholesterol," says Alisha Rajan. Four kinds of lime pickles are also on sale.
"The jam, pickles and chutneys are all home-made and very little preservative has been used. We also make cakes," says Anita.
The jam is priced between Rs. 40 and Rs. 50 and the pickles between Rs. 45 and Rs. 55. Christmas cakes are also available.
Another feature of the store is the `tea club', which opens at teatime.
On Saturday nights, the joint also functions as a takeaway. Dishes such as biryani and curd rice, with a payasam, are available. The menu is changed every weekend.
