AT the new Roll Call outlet at Nagarjuna Circle Chef Tapan from Kolkata prepares piping hot rolls--delectable chunks of chicken, fish or vegetables wrapped in a crisp paratha to be served with a tangy sauce.
"Rolls are to Kolkata what biry'ani is to Hyderabad. Back home, the rolls are preferred anytime snacks or a meal, " explains Rahul Maitra of Roll Call, the chain serving Bengali snacks in the twin cities.
"The name takes off from `attendance registers at college', standing for our aimof providing delectable food which would make people come for more regularly, " he explains. Easy on the purse, filling and non-messy, the authentic rolls from Kolkata have, in fact, caught on like fire among the young in the twin cities. From a single outlet near Hi-Tec City, Madhapur that was started about a year ago, today the eatery has two more branches, namely at My Home Tycoon Building, Begumpet and Lumbini Amrutha Chambers, Nagarjuna Circle, Banjara Hills respectively, dishing out take-away snacks, in a jiffy.
The USP of the place is the Moghlai Paratha stuffed, shallow-fried, delicately-flavoured parathas that makes for a satisfying meal and available in options such as Double Egg Moghlai, Vegetable Egg Moghlai or Chicken Egg Moghlai. The other popular Kolkata snacks that Roll Calls offers are Chops deep-fried cutlets, Kobiraji Cutlets--fish, chicken or vegetables patties topped with egg and Pakoras made from paneer, vegetables, chicken, mutton and fish seasoned with eastern spices. "We have chefs from Kolkata who make these snacks based on the traditional recipes and method of cooking. Some of the popular rolls with customers are Chicken Rolls, Vegetable Egg Moghlai and Chicken Kobiraji," says Maitra. And no, you don't get Sandesh, Ras Malai or other Bengali desserts here.
"We thought of opening a Bengali Restaurant as well but presently with the tremendous response coming in for take-aways, we intend to open more branches and we will be starting home delivery shortly," he adds. But for now, you can reach Roll Call on Tel: 55106231/32.
