The ongoing Crafts mela organised by Swayambhar Nari offers a variety of handlooms and handicrafts at reasonable prices.

JUTE EARRINGS, Madhubani paintings and Batik printsare a few of the interesting buys lined up at the ongoing Swayambhar Nari Crafts Mela at YMCA Secunderabad. An acronym for Self-reliant Non-formal Action Research Institute, the Kolkata-based non-governmental organisation with branches across the country, works for the economic progress of the underprivileged section of society through entrepreneurship and craft development. "We organise crafts fairs displaying their products regularly and we introduce new craftsmen every year," says, S. Bhadra, secretary Swayambhar Nari.

Thus, for the Crafts Mela this year, the organisation brings diverse products. The fair brings cotton saris with kantha stitch and block prints, those in georgettes with delicate handwork, and chiffon saris featuring Benarasi work. Look for Benarasi salwar kameez sets (Rs. 950) in pastels, ideal for party wear. Cotton salwar kameez sets from Gujarat are good buys for college wear. Match these with wooden and jute earrings. The batik section has a lot of kurtas. One also finds kurtas in silk from West Bengal here. Jute slippers (Rs. 100-Rs.120) from the State also figure in the display. In the second popular section - home décor, the options include cotton bed sheets, machine wash-friendly quilts and jute curtains. For the dining table, the grass and jute table mats make interesting buys. A set of six tablemats is priced at Rs. 120. You can also choose single pieces of mats in different colours for glass or coffee cups for Rs. 10 per piece. The coffee mugs from Khurja are priced at Rs. 35 per piece onwards. While at the crockery section have a look at the miniature tea set (Rs.150) comprising cups, saucers, milk jug and teapot.
