Art with heart

Through its exhibition of the works of senior artists at the Artistic Gallery, T. Nagar, from August 23 to September 2, the design unit "Artistic" plans to raise funds for the CAN-STOP counselling centre

ABOUT TEN years ago, a few graduating students of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, decided at their farewell party, to keep in touch with each other, on a daily basis. The result was: Artistic, a designing unit. Over the years, the friends have been striking creative sparks as they have been turning out objets d'art - exclusive murals, outdoor sculpture, exclusive metal casting and paintings for architects and interior designers in the city.

Having found their feet professionally, the artists are today spreading their wings further. The result is the Artistic Art Gallery.

The gallery, located at `Ankur Plaza', G.N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar, was opened to the public recently.

Michelangelo called art "a shadow of the divine perfection"; compassion is part of that divine perfection.

Members of Artistic believe in that humane quality. "Artistic has a social vision. To this day, we have been contributing to social organisations in our individual capacities.

Now, we will be working towards such goals, collectively," says B. Umesh of Artistic. As a result of this conviction, a non-profit organisation called Artistics' Trust will soon be formed.

The specific projects the trust will take up are still on the drawing board. It will "encourage the study of art, provide financial assistance to non-profit organisations, offer scholarships to economically disadvantaged students, conduct art camps for physically and mentally challenged children, and hold annual art exhibitions as fund-raisers for social causes ".To start with, Artistic will be holding "an exhibition of paintings by senior artists of Chennai" from August 23 to September 2.

The proceeds will be shared by the CAN-STOP counselling centre, which works for cancer care and cure, and the participating artists.
