Curries galore

The ongoing Curry Festival at Rasavathi with popular dishes from the epicurean hubs of coastal Andhra and the Chettinad region promises to warm up chilly evenings.

SPICE ROUTE: Some like it hot.

IN THE last few days, the torrential rain and resultant chill in the air have been the talk of the town. "Spicy, piping hot food is just right for the season," says D. Shiv Shankar, Manager-Operations, Rasavathi, which is hosting a curry festival with popular curries from coastal Andhra and the Chettinad region.

While green and red chillies with black pepper corns are the important spices used in coastal Andhra preparations, regional spices such as vartha are used with coconut and aniseed to give that piquant flavour in Chettinad cuisine. For the festival, Chef Chellam from Chennai and Chef Raju are whipping up delicacies in the Chettinad and coastal Andhra tradition respectively.

The gradient ranges from a slightly spicy Mulakkai jeedipappu — drumsticks with cashew nuts and double beans to a Koli Chettinad — a red-hot chicken curry prepared in the Chettinad style.

If you are looking for a tangy affair, try the Meen kolumbu, a murrel preparation. Other popular dishes are Velluli kodi — garlic chicken Andhra style, Nalla miriyala natu kodi — black pepper flavoured country chicken and the popular Gongura mamsam apart from the Totakura liver koora (this is a vegetarian preparation) — steamed totakura cakes deep fried.

From the Chettinad kitchen, the Kaycari Chettinad — a mixed vegetable curry, Moore kollumbu kadi in the south Indian style and Koli uppo varuval— chicken with red chillies, are popular.

"The curries go well with rice. Also most people order for a regular thali and choose some curries from the festival menu," says Shiv Shankar. The vegetarian (Rs. 60) and non-vegetarian (Rs. 90) thali includes sabzis, lentils, puris, rice and dessert. A table for four would bill anywhere between Rs. 500 - Rs. 600, during the festival, that closes on August 10.

Apart from the piping hot food, the ambience, with vibrant Cheriyal paintings depicting themes from mythology, tribal art décor and the bamboo curtains, is just right and sets the tone for a meal on a rainy day.
