Glimpses of Thai culture, cuisine and technology will be showcased at a three-day Thailand Exhibition - 2003, which commences in the city today.
THAILAND COMES to Chennai today. Thailand Exhibition 2003 brings Thai culture, cuisine and technology to the city. As part of the expo, 58 Thai companies will be spreading out their consumer products and services at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam from July 16 to 18.
These companies are said to cover the waterfront of thriving industries in Thailand. Among those represented at the expo are automobile, food and beverages, construction product and hardware, children's products, household and kitchenware products, computers and accessories, electrical appliances, health and beauty, leather products and footwear, chemical packaging products, textile and fashion accessories, and rubber products industries. The expo is expected to set the pace for stronger Indo-Thai ties in industry and trade, it is said.
The exhibition is open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. (for trade-related visitors) and from 4.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. for the general public.
Apart from the (afore-mentioned) thrust of the expo, there are numerous bells and whistles that are meant to liven things up and also facilitate a better understanding of Thai culture.
Special sessions will be held to tutor people in Thai culinary preparations. The Royal Thai Embassy has flown in Thai chefs for this purpose.
The first session (from 1.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m. on July 16) will be on the preparation of "chicken in galangal-infused soup" (Tom Kha Kai) and "Thai stir-fried noodles" (Pad Thai). The second session (from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. on July 16) is on "Thai herb snack" (Kob Kaew Smoonprai) and "mock pomegranate seeds" (Tab Tim Krob). The third session (from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. on July 17) is on "stir-fried chicken and cashewnuts" (Gai Pad Med Mamuang Himmapan) and "papaya salad" (Som Tam). The fourth session (from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. on July 17) is on "fish cakes" (Tod Man Plagrai) and "taro balls in coconut milk" (Bua Loy Puek). The fifth session (from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. on July 18) is on "golden bags" (Tung Thong) and "green chicken curry" (Kaeng Kiao Wan Gai). The sixth session (from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. on July 18) is on "spicy prawn soup" (Tom Yum Goong) and "water-chestnut pudding" (Taco Haew).
A group of Thai dancers will be shaking their legs on these days. The dance programmes will be on from 12.00 to 1.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. on July 16; and from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. and 6.00 to 7.00 p.m. on July 17.
The performances will feature, inter alia, dances from places such as Tavaravadee, Srivichai, Lopburi and Sukhothai eras in Thai history.
