Managing operations the ERP way

ERP packages help integrate the operations of smaller companies and make management easier.

GONE ARE the days when a business was a one-man show with limited growth that could be adequately managed by just the owner. Today, it has evolved a lot. The Departments in a company have a varied set of functions.

As the business expands, it becomes all the more difficult to monitor the activities of each department.

Once Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software was developed, it was possible to integrate all departments and functions of a big company onto a single system that could serve specific needs.

But, people were wary of using it in smaller concerns. "ERP is no longer the domain of big companies. Having a software offering complete ERP solutions in a company is no longer considered a luxury. A lot of changes are taking place in the corporate world and ERP has become an absolute necessity now," said V Raghavendra Prasad, Executive Director of PSG STEP, at the launch of Piton Financials, the web-based ERP software designed by the Belgium-based VDS Computing.

The software is meant to suit the specific needs of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Quite appropriately, Insoft International Products Private Limited (IIPPL), the authorised dealers for the software in India, chose to launch the software in Coimbatore, which has a good concentration of SMEs.

"This software is useful for organisations having 100 to 2000 employees," noted George L. C. Baekelmans, Chairman of IIPPL. "There is a huge gap between an accounting package and ERP package.

Piton aims to bridge that gap," he said.

"It is possible to integrate the software with other reporting tools. Import and export of data and interconnection with similar packages can be done easily," explained Luc de Sutter, Chairman of VDS Computing.
