Happy holidays

KOCHI IS a city of visiting celebrities from all walks of life, who yearn for a little relaxation from the pressures of their celebrity status and also the city which cradles the prestigious High Court of Kerala. For Mr. Pravin H. Parekh, who is president of the Supreme Court Advocates -on-Record Association and legal counsel to some of the most powerful personalities in India, a visit to Kochi is one of the few times he can relax with his family, away from the pressures.About Kochi, Mr.Parekh speaks with warm praise _ Kochi is a beautiful city. Kochiites are wonderful human beings. Kerala is the favourite and hottest destination within India and abroad. When I travel abroad, people ask me if I have visited Kerala, that_shows how popular Kerala is. I have great admiration the present state of governance which has truly boosted Kerala's tourism. But two things I would like to say is that Keralites are so brilliant and hard working, and at their very best outside Kerala, if they could be like this within their State also, Kerala would be the most developed State in the country. Secondly, the roads are in a very bad condition and something should be done about this."_

While the success stories of many lawyers revolve on the strengths of elite education, supportive and financially secure family backgrounds and often a legal heritage in itself as the ladder to inevitable success, this is a different story entirely and yet one of the biggest success stories in the country _ of a man whose dreams and determination catapulted him into reaching the very pinnacle of excellence and success in his profession.

His is a touching story, of a childhood spent within the confines of a Gujarati medium school where English was taught in Gujarati. The desire to become a lawyer brought him to Mumbai where he studied in the reputed Elphinstone College, yet found himself struggling with a language that bewildered him and so he spent a lot of time learning English.

His dedication and determination in overcoming his limitations in learning and familiarising himself with a different language showed when he secured the third rank in the University exams .

In 1969, Mr.Parekh moved to Delhi. In 1972, Mr.Parekh passed the Advocates-on-Record examination with the first rank

Mr.Parekh holds several important positions apart from his incredibly busy schedule as a Supreme Court lawyer. "Anything I have is due to God's grace. God has been kind to me. My father was a primary school teacher who knew the importance of education and told us that the only wealth he could give us was education... ."
