On a fast track

UDAY SINGH, the managing director of Columbia Tristar in India has staged a coup of sorts with "Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle" the high-octane sequel to "Charlies Angels" releasing in India on July 4, a week after its U.S. release! This is the first time that a Hollywood blockbuster releases in India within seven days of its world premiere. In "Charlies Angels 2: Full Throttle", Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu go undercover to retrieve missing silver bands, which contain valuable encrypted information vital for the state department. The angels using their expertise as masters of disguise, espionage and martial arts can stop the perpetrator, a mysterious `fallen angel' played by Demi Moore, who plays the negative character. It is an all-out female action thriller.

At a time when pirated DVDs of new Hollywood movies hit the Indian markets a few days after their U.S. release, this decision of Columbia to have an immediate release is a smart move. The original "Charlies Angels" did bumper business in India where there is a demand for female action films. In spite of dubbing having virtually stopped, with the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to hike taxes by 100 per cent on dubbed films, Columbia is dubbing "Charlies Angels - 2" into Tamil seeing the potential in the market.
