Family fortunes

"MAIN PREM Ki Diwani Hoon" ("MPKDH"), which released last Friday, marks a return to the comforts of — the formula — one that is about traditions, relations, generations, one that does not test your intellect or imagination but stretches to three hours and seventeen minutes. Will Sooraj (The Sun) Barjatya live up to his name with "MPKDH" and lighten up the box-office? Sooraj has delivered more mega-blockbusters ("Maine Pyar Kiya", "Hum Aapke Hai Kaun" and "Hum Saath Saath Hain") than any other director in the history of Bollywood. In commercial Indian cinema, he has been a trendsetter and a creator of good musicals and a `Guru' to new generation moviemakers like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar.

But will Sooraj Barjatya's smart packaging work again at a time when the multiplex audience's tastes have changed and they prefer films dealing with ghosts and spirits ("Raaz", "Jism" and the recent "Bhoot") or stories dealing with murder, mystery, lust and illicit relationships with bold and beautiful models turning heroines ("Andaaz" and "Khwahish"). The last time Sooraj made a film was four years back and today glossy, happily-ever-after families are only seen in Ekta Kapoor's `K' serials! Still "MPKDH" is an eagerly awaited film in the trade, basically because of Sooraj Barjatya's impeccable track record. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan. Advance booking for "MPKDH" has started on a brisk note.
