More than a mug of fizz

The ongoing `Kingfisher Fusion Fizz' at Fusion 9 presenting exotic beertails is a refreshing change from the regular pitcher.

TOAST TO COLOUR: Beer just got more colourful.

THE PITCHER takes a more colourful look this monsoon, beyond the drought beer, as the tall pilsners hold a rainy blue or cloudy grey tenor. The occasion is Kingfisher Fusion Fizz, the ongoing beer tails fete at Fusion 9. "Any good bar is not just known by the straight hard drinks, but by the cocktails it serves. This is the first time that we are having a beer tails fest in the twin cities. The beertails are popular abroad and have caught on in big cities in the country. For the concept, we don't deny the beer experience but add a fancy value to it," says Shankar Krishnamurthy, owner of Fusion 9 — the lounge bar-cum-global cuisine restaurant.

And what have you for the fest? Five beer-based cocktails of varied strengths. Brown Bomber is a mild blend of beer where the ginger ale cuts the bitterness of beer, coupled with brandy, gin, angostura bitter and lime juice and served with a mint sprig, a slice of cucumber and a dash of orange. Jamaican Jig is an almond-flavoured stronger option laced with dark rum (Jamaican rum from where the name of the drink comes), falernum and lemonade.

If you happen to be a Tom Cruise buff, then Red Eye is sure to enthuse you. The exotic mix of beer with tomato juice, tabasco, salt, pepper and egg yolk is the hero's favourite in the flick Cocktail. "Brown Bomber, Jamaican Jig and Red Eye have been the popular beer tails at the fest," says bar manager, T. Sarkar. Adding more colour to the line-up are Bubble Blue (beer laced with ginger ale, Blue Curacao, limejuice and vodka served with a mint sprig) and Ale'd Strawberry (a mix of beer, lemonade, strawberry, limejuice, lemonade, vodka and mint sprig).

CATCHING ON: Five beer-based cocktails of varied strengths.

"The beertail is universal with our kind of food," says Shankar. Thus, the drink goes well with Calzone — a veggie flip over pizza from the wood-fired oven, Chicken shawarma served with pita bread, pickled vegetables, French fries and tahina or a tangy Penne al gamberi provencale — penne pasta with shrimp, tomatoes and topped with grated cheese, served with chilli flakes and mustard sauce, if you are walking over here for a dinner.

The beertails can also double up as a late afternoon drink with Cajun fish or the Felafel kebabs. The festival is open for lunch (12.30 p.m.-4 p.m.) and dinner (7 p.m.-11 p.m.) closing on June 30. For one, the beertail is sure going to be a change from the regular plain old mug o'fizz.
