For a child's sake

Ammulu (TELUGU)

Cast: Vandemataram Srinivas, Suman, Ravali, Baby Greeshma

Mus: Vandemataram Srinivas

Dir: Dr. Srinath

MUSIC DIRECTOR Vandemataram Srinivas, who has over a hundred films to his credit, makes his debut as an actor in the film. Child sentiment dominates the drama. He is given the look of a tramp, with a bit of Chaplinesque influence. The character he plays in the film is that of a Good Samaritan auto-driver, obsessed with a child named Ammulu (Baby Greeshma), for whom he eventually lays down his life.

Kittu (Srinivas) ferries children to school and back home. Ammulu (Baby Greeshma), Sneha's (Yamuna) child is left in his auto-rickshaw for fear of being killed by her father/ grandfather

The infant is picked up by a child lifter (Kallu Chidambaram) who, in turn, sells her to Prakash (Suman); whose wife (Ravali) delivers a stillborn. Prakash can save his wife only by placing the infant by her side. Prakash's co-brother (Jeeva) wants to grab the property corners Prakash and his wife who hand over the child to Kittu before dying. Ammulu is poisoned and is admitted to a hospital, where the doctor tells Kittu that both her kidneys are damaged and he needs to raise Rs. 5 lakhs for her surgery. How he manages to get the money forms the crucial part of the film.

Scripting the story (Sanjeevi) appears to be a painstaking exercise. A number of playback singers from the North and the South render the songs well making it sound like a musical. Artistes like Dharmavarapu Subrahamaniam and Brahmanandam are used in comical situations loosely linked to the main plot. Though the first half of the film lacks pace, the second part picks up.Baby Greeshma in title role looks endearing. Among others who leave their mark are Kota, Suman, Srinivasa Rao, Gokina Rama Rao, Sivajiraja and Yamuna. The neat film is suitable for family viewing.
