GO CHIC: Stripes are `in'.
"SINCE THESE mysteries are beyond us, let us pretend we are their masters." Jean Cocteau's famous saying could well be applied to fashion, a series of mysterious predictions. Every year, every season, old styles are reinvented and new forms come into being.
Absorbing the weight of the above, the basic shirt is revitalised this season. The First World War put women of all social classes into shirts. This big leap for female emancipation gradually led to women donning shirts in civilian life. From then... till date the women's shirt has been rallying elements of style with `power dressing'.
This season sees an explosion of shirt styles. The style gallery starts with concepts ideal to complement the woman of today. The silhouette comprises a comfortable fit to supplement the activities of `work world'.
The collar lapel width is not too wide and not too narrow. The lapel scales in the medium width of 2.75'' to 3''. The same narration talks of cuff details that measure about 2.5''. Fold-ups or cuff details with slits are sailing strong. Stretch the arms to three-quarter-sleeve length. Cut sleeve and short sleeve ideas are also doing well. Proceedings of the workday take shape in cotton-lycra blends, mercerised wrinkle-free cottons and Irish linens.
WHITE MAGIC: For the boardroom.
The basic shirt receives new coding by breaking away from the so-called `formal boundaries'. Ruffles create an element of interest. Ruffles spaced on either side of the centre front placket, at the bottom hem or say at the sleeve hem bring in a breath of joy.
You could tuck the shirt in to create personal style. The shirt tail ends at the waist level taking a feminine round with side slits.
A new vision of femininity is flagged under the sign of geometry. Stripes and checks take a leap on the style charts. Vertical, horizontal and stripes at an angle are ruling strong. Also, vibrant checks on bias (cut diagonally to the grain) absorb an important position on the summer calendar.
Epaulets are out and eyelets at the centre front and side seam area are in. Shoe like criss-cross detailing with lace is sailing well. Zipper at the centre front has been blown off the charts.
BASIC BLACK: Must-have in the wardrobe.
Style charts also indicate a high summer silhouette with high-energy florals thrown across a simple line of shirts. Orthonormal network of motifs small motifs graduating into big size towards one part of the shirt sit under the style canopy.
Surface details like drawn thread work, frayed edges, pin tucks, cross tucks and spaced tucks rule supreme. Along with cottons, chiffons, denims, georgettes, lightweight silks, hakoba variations and lurex incorporations sit pretty in the fabric tray.
Styling travels through references from the last season yielding modern exuberance with a new expression. Be a part of this circuit.
