SHEER & SHADED: Ritu Saluja
RITU SALUJA (23212677) is regarded as one of the most innovative and original designers in the twin cities. An alumini of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Ritu is presently apprenticing at Shataansh. Ritu believes in avoiding the comfort of predictability.
For her aesthetic summer line, Ritu has experimented with linen and tussar blended with chenille using leather as a slubbed weave. She has also used tussar blended with jute and mukaish. Having learnt the art of blending, she has created sheer fabrics augmented with embroidery. Then there are leather strips and slubbed yarns with lycra. Colourful nylon yarn has been used with sequins that shine sinuously through lace.
For her new collection, Ritu has created her own line of Kota with Swarovski and ari. She has used ethnic embroidery with innovative use of pollen grains. Embroidered Lucknowi with kota, stone and shells create an elegant palette in beautiful summer shades.
The summer collection is effortlessly fresh. There is, for instance, a fabric with interplay of shimmering weave and leather that is western and free spirited. Ritu has created an antique feel to these fabrics used in the days of the royalty. For her blocks, she uses relics of past merged with sombre dyes while a hint of sequins highlight portions of the picture for the glitz value.
Ritu enjoys working with the sheer fabrics. Shades of ivory and black with sequins and beads on nylon, the collection showcases silhouettes that are classical, nouveau or just plain fun. Embroidery in fine thread has always been the designer's forte and Ritu uses stones and zardosi to finish the outfits.
The colours are muted and her designs akin to an art form. Ritu has used a fruity palette this season with a mixed matrix of embroidery. This young designer has made a mark for herself. Some of her creations are on display at Shataansh but you can also have outfits made to order.
