Now, UK offers greener pastures

Opportunities are immense for qualified and experienced nurses in the UK

AFTER THE Gulf countries and the United States, it's now time for the white-gowned angels to fly to the United Kingdom, a country that seems eager to rope in Indian nurses. How good are one's chances? "The opportunities are immense for qualified and experienced nurses in many of the advanced countries. The immediate requirement in UK is 6000. It may only grow bigger," says Ms Charu Modi Bhartia, Chief Executive Officer of Healthcare Placements, a venture of the K K Modi Group. The advantage for Indian nurses is that they are very young. "The UK poses a very special challenge to their career. Hence proper training and a certificate confirming their quality will do a world of good to them, " she states.

Earlier they recruited nurses from the Philippines in large numbers and now the focus in on Indians because our curriculum is quite intense. "Indian nurses are well qualified and put in over 3000 clinical hours a year. Those in the U.K are also impressed with our dedication."

She says that if Indian nurses find placements in the UK, it will boost the country's economy as well. "When there is a great demand for us in the UK and a good chance for money flow, why don't we grab the opportunity? Nursing is fast outpacing the IT segment," opines Ms Charu.

Is it difficult process for Indian nurses to go to foreign shores? "Not exactly. The UK process is quite different. It's much shorter. In fact, we are trying to make it much easier by educating nurses on the subject, strengthening their English and adding a bit on cultural orientation. We have a diverse set of faculty to boost their confidence," says Rita Marathey of the firm. In order to make Indian nurses suitable for stints abroad, the company has been conducting preparatory courses which enable them to qualify for licensing exams. These courses will soon be available in Kochi, Coimbatore and Kottayam as well. In collaboration with the International University of Health Sciences, Healthcare Placements also offers part-time B.Sc (Post Basic) course in nursing. This course is designed for working nurses and provides flexibility of schedules. The company can be contacted at 24-A Ring Road, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi or at contact@healthcareplacements.com.
