A nervous wreck?

FEW OF us escape the occasional need to make a speech, whether at a family celebration or any function. When the time comes, here's how to deliver it with confidence. First, write the purpose of your speech, in one sentence, on a sheet of paper. Then jot down the things you could include. Just one or two words will do. Now cull. Cross out anything your audience already knows or that doesn't directly contribute to your goal. Number the topics that are left into some sort of logical order. Congratulations: In less than ten minutes, you have the framework of your speech! Now add a few stories, anecdotes or proverbs to lighten the listening load. Finally, top and tail your speech with a short introduction and a strong finish. Next comes practice in lots of short sessions. When time comes to deliver, you'll know it so well you'll need only a few notes to prompt. Breathe deep, stand tall and look at your audience. Keep any nerves at bay by focussing on your message.
