The spider plant
Spider plant makes an effective border in a garden. It can be raised in pots, provided there is space for the offsets to grow.
THE SPIDER plant gets its name from its spider like offsets. The plants produce long flower stems, ending up in a tuft of leaves and roots, which when detached and planted grow into independent plants.
The scientific name Chlorophyton species (Chloros - green), Phyton - plant) refers to the green-edged leaves of the plant. The leaves are narrow and long like blades of grass. They radiate and arch out in graceful semi circles. The soft green of the leaves is soothing to the eyes. The plant is extremely easy to propagate. Well-drained loamy soil, moisture and shade are essential. The clumps of the spider plant, closely planted, make effective edge plants in outdoor gardens. Potted plants, with an outer container, could be placed on stands, allowing enough space for the spider offsets to grow.
