Stalwart's death

MAY 9 was a sad day for the woman on the silver screen. The `crusader of woman's cause' as he is fondly known, director-producer Kranthi Kumar breathed his last at his residence in Hyderabad. He was 61.

Kranthi Kumar who produced and directed several movies had championed the cause of woman and this was evident in heroine-oriented movies like Jyothi, Swathi, Nyayam Kavali, Amekadha, Gowthami and recently Thommidi nelalu starring Soundarya. Born in Penamalur in Vijayawada, he did M.A. and L.L.B. before entering the film world in 1968. He introduced Chiranjeevi as hero in Pranam Kareedu. He was instrumental in shaping K. Raghavendra Rao and Dasari Narayana Rao as ace directors. Raghavendra Rao directed Jyothi, Amekadha and Kalpana, while Dasari directed Sardar Papa Rayudu produced by Kranthi Kumar. The industry paid rich tribute to the stalwart.

G. MANJULA KUMAR
