Silk: A status symbol

The `silk sari' has become a symbol of social status. Customers are prepared to shell out more money when it comes to buying quality silk saris. The Kancheepuram S.M. Silks, which has carved a niche for itself in the world of silks, is organising a sari exhibition at Hotel Dolphin to tap the discerning buyers who insist on quality.
"The demand for silk saris has gone up tremendously compared to 1970s and 1980s. In the past only the affluent used to go for silks but today even the middle class are buying silk saris," the proprietor of the company, Manoharan, told Metro Plus.
Manoharan started in a small way through wholesale business in Kancheepuram. Later, he forayed into direct sales and subsequently opened silk showrooms in Chennai. Today, Kancheepuram S.M. Silks is ranked among the three big names in silks in Chennai. "We have six in-house designers. These designers have not done any courses from reputed fashion technology institutes but have learnt the art from their forefathers, who were traditional designers. Now we are also using computers and no wonder our designs are being copied by reputed textile houses," he says.
"The exhibition is a platform to the company to introduce itself to the customers of north Andhra region. We have six showrooms in Chennai and most of the buyers come there to buy silk saris in bulk for auspicious occasions like weddings," he adds.
The exhibition is drawing good crowds. The prices of the silk saris range from Rs.1260 to Rs.40,500. Cotton and fancy saris range from Rs.189 to Rs.2,520. A discount of 30 per cent is given at the exhibition. The exhibition will be on till June 1.
