Not a shooting star!

"The subject demands a percentage of technological involvement. Too much of reliance on technical aspects will mar the effect the creator of the film wants to convey"

AT A time when producers shied away from going outdoors for film shooting, there came a young director from the south to set a new trend. He busted the jinx, exposing the nature's beauty by shooting films in the green fields of his native district.

He is none other than the director Bharathiraja. His `Wordsworthian' style went down well with the people. This self-styled `son of the soil', who was in the Temple City to attend a private function, recently, shares his views on film-making with

T. Saravanan.

Q: All these years, as the son of the soil, you have been saying that your sense of belonging is more and is well reflected in your films too. But have you, at any point of time, had an idea of organising any of your film's inaugural function here?

A: If I say that I had not thought of it, then, I am cheating my conscience. To be frank, several times I had this idea but it could not materialise due to various reasons. I was thinking of launching my next project `Kutra Parambarai' here. But, Kamal Hasan has given shape to my thoughts.

Q: How do you view the overdose of technical advancement in the present day film-making?

A: The subject demands a percentage of technological involvement. Too much of reliance on technical aspects will mar the effect the creator of the film wants to convey. At present, some of the technical-savvy directors are keen to bring all their technical knowledge to bear on their films, which sometimes kills the main story line, the essence of any movie.

Q: Do you feel that there is dearth of good subjects, as most of the films revolve around love?

A: I totally disagree with you. There is no dearth, but the director should choose good subjects. Fearing failures, everyone wants to follow the success story formula which ultimately becomes stale and ends up in failure. One has to become a good creator. My dreams are rich. But of late, the creators tend to borrow idea from somewhere.

Q: Your opinion about the invasion of Western culture?

A: It has played havoc with our culture. Our joint family system has gone into the oblivion and with that, our precious human values have also gone. So, no doubt, the Western culture had made its mark in a big way. Further, the anti-hero sentiment is gaining popularity in the Tamil cinema, which is not a good sign for our social set up.

Q: At present, there is a slight slump in the Tamil cinema, what do you say is the reason?

A: Undoubtedly, the emergence of television serials coupled with the video piracy. Most of the women are now confined to their living room, watching these serials and no one shows any inclination, whatsoever, to come out to theatres to watch films. But, still, there are people, who rush to the theatres to see the films of their favourite stars.

Q: At present, your son, Manoj, is experiencing a slump in his film career. Have you planned anything to lift his spirits?

A: He is here to act in movies and not to jump up and down (refers to him dancing), which does not suit him well. Let my movie, `Eeera Nilam' come out, then, you will identify Manoj as a talented and hard working young hero.
