"The prime objective of the company is to retain its customers and to bring in more customers into its fold"

THE AUTOMOBILE industry has been growing by leaps and bounds, if the number of vehicles on the roads is any indication. With the craze for new models is on the rise, the car manufacturing companies are vying with one another in terms of upgrading the existing models with added features and introduction of new models, but all these vehicles are always projected as rich man's property, as, the average salaried middle class man cannot afford such a luxury.
But now times are changing with a plenty of financial companies coming out with various easy pay monthly instalment schemes to make the middle class people's dreams come true. Still the lower middle class people feel the pinch, as the minimum cost of a new vehicle is around two lakhs.
At this juncture, the Maruti Udyog Limited has stepped into action to cater to the vehicular needs of the people belonging to the lower middle class rung.
Having rolled out four million vehicles, the company has now come out with an innovative idea to tap the potential middle class segment, the `Maruti True Value', where the buyer either can exchange his old model car belonging to any brand for a used or for a brand new Maruti vehicle, or can straightaway purchase any used Maruti car.
"Definitely this is not a second hand car show room, but a pre-owned car show room," affirms Anup Sengupta, Engineer, incharge of `Maruti True Value', Tamil Nadu.
With new models rolling out every other day, yesterday's product becomes old today. Every time the customer sees a new model, he rues his misfortune for not having waited for some more time. The Maruti Udyog has provided a perfect remedy for these customers.
With the True Value, the customer can exchange his car for a brand new Maruti vehicle with a 10 to 12 per cent reduction in the price of his old car, if the car is sold within a year of purchase.
"The prime objective of the company is to retain its customers and to bring in more customers into its fold," says Mr.Anup.Cashing in on the reliability of the brand name, the company provides a higher resale value for the Maruti vehicles. "As for as the sellers are concerned, there are no limitations, as they can bring in any old car and can exchange it for any Maruti vehicle, but for the buyer the company offers range of Maruti vehicles which would be either seven years or used for one lakh km," says Anup.
The company offers a warranty for one year or 15,000 km whichever is earlier, for the used cars it sells and also offers three free services.
"Besides, the Maruti Udyog has fixed a target residual value for each car, each model and also charted out a 120-point checklist to shortlist the merits and demerits of the vehicle and according to it, the price is lowered from the target residual value," avers Mr.Anup.
"The company takes care of transfer of ownership of the car. Besides, finance options are also available for the purchase of pre-owned cars," he says.
Such outlets have become a grand success in Bangalore and Delhi. The company inaugurated its Chennai show room last month. The Maruti Udyog also has plans to open similar showrooms in Coimbatore and Tiruchi, said Aruchamy, Senior General Manager, ABT Maruti.
