Sunshine in your hair
|
The harsh summer sun can play havoc with your hair. Here are some do's and don'ts for the season.
|
A FEW weeks of summer sun can undo the yearlong protection offered to the hair. The UV rays deplete the natural oils and moisture, while the dry winds tangle the hair causing breakage and split ends apart from bringing in dust particles.
And when you take a plunge into the pool to escape the heat, chlorinated water gets into the act - especially on treated hair, which loses moisture at a faster rate, causing colour fading and drooping perms.
Protection... "This is a season to invest in some chic headgear such as a straw hat, scarf or a floppy hat that is in vogue."
One can also pick up some sunscreen gels or alternatively leave in conditioners containing UV filters," says Laila Kakade, a beautician.Tangles... "Untangle the hair gently using a wide toothcomb working from the ends upwards to the roots.
If you have long hair, it is a good idea to keep it tied to prevent tangles," says Laila.
Alternately you can braid your hair while wet and keep it braided through the day.
Squeaky-clean... "Shampoo and condition your hair when the sun sets or before retiring."
"Let it dry naturally. Leave the heat styling for those special night outs only."
"After a swim, make sure to rinse the chlorinated or salt water (if on a beach), thoroughly with plenty of fresh water."
"It is a good idea to carry bottled water with you," says Laila.
And feed `em... "Yoghurt is a proven conditioner that minimises the dryness caused by the summer sun and chlorinated water."
"Apply a pack of plain yoghurt, keep it for about 20 minutes and rinse followed by a hair specific shampoo and round off with a conditioner for the hair shaft and ends."
"Summer is the time for dehydration as well so drink plenty of water during the day," adds Laila.
Keeping the crowning glory shining all through the summer sun is the mantra for the season.
