The Port today
THE COCHIN Port went through several ups and downs and is looking right up ahead. In the last few years, losses mounted but now, after remedial measures, the Port has recorded a net surplus of Rs 14.5 crores in 200-2003 as against Rs 35.02 crore deficit the previous year.
While it concentrated on business development all through the past, it is looking forward to other avenues to reap profits. The latest step was to open its doors to passenger vessels.
It is projecting itself as a major cruise destination on the international East-West sea trade route.
A proposal to construct a world calss passenger terminal is on the anvil. Another novel idea is the ayurvedic rejuvenation cruise, which is getting much attention now.
The International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam, a bunkering terminal, a special economic zone, LNG terminal at Puthuvypeen etc are what Cochin Port will have shortly.
Sir Bristow sure would have proud of it, were he alive.
