A Malayali's Canadian affair
|
Though a Canadian citizen, Jacob Devassy is at heart a true Malayali. He recounts his contributions to science and thought, often polemic to V. SAVITHA

CHENNOOR, IN Ernakulam district, is one of those small islands situated at the mouth of the Periyar River before it joins the Arabian Sea. It is this island that Jacob Devassy has made his home, in a house that lay unused and was inhabited only by creepy-crawlies and birds for 25 years. A Malayali, but a Canadian citizen for the past 30 years, Mr. Devassy is now here on a visa. The Canadian flag that flies high in front of his house proclaims his ties with Canada. Yet, for him, there is no place like Kerala, "I have been to many places, but I never found anything like this," he says with enthusiasm.
Mr. Devassy could easily be dubbed a philosopher. One who is prepared to go a step further, applying philosophy and logic, to understand and resolve practical problems, like the role of stress in accidents and the cause of domestic violence. He is currently the president of the International Institute of Efficiency, Canada. It has been a long journey that has taken him here. His studies of different disciplines of management pointed to him that in an industry these did not function in efficiently. "It had been said long ago that in 90 per cent of cases, stress caused accidents. I proved it theoretically," says Mr. Devassy. His argument is that if there is efficiency, there should be no accidents.
Mr. Devassy explains that it was 20 years ago that all disciplines of industries fell in place. "The anatomy and physiology of the industries became clear." Mr. Devassy goes on to say that this showed that the curriculum of academies around the world had been faulty all these years.
Mr. Devassy has developed the `general law of motion,' which he claims is the law that governs the entire universe. He approaches the issue from the field he is most familiar with - industries. "Manufacturing is the prototype of the universe," he says. The body functions exactly like a manufacturing unit, he adds. And the universe too follows the same pattern. "Every action, from the movement of a leaf in the wind, to me lifting my hand - all follow the general law of motion. General law of motion is the unifying theory of the forces of nature," he says. To put the law very simply, motion is due to the `never ending' tendency to achieve a balanced state, given the force of gravity. Mr. Devassy developed this theory in 1998 and has presented it at the University of Havana, Cuba.
He recounted that it was during the time of Galileo that the link between philosophy and science was broken. Mr. Devassy declares that he was the first to have brought back philosophy to science, and assert that solutions could be found by putting the two together.
Mr. Devassy is aware that most of the things he says can kick up a controversy, but he is ready to defend himself. He also asserts that only a Keralite could arrive at the general law of motion as he did. He attributes it to the religious and philosophical history of the land. "It has been incorporated into each one of us; we are all influenced by the way philosophy evolved in Kerala. No one else will have the kind of outlook this has gifted us."
This thinker is currently working on a project regarding domestic violence in association with the Mahatma Gandhi University. His theory is that the reason for domestic violence boils down to mistakes in mate selection, and the relationship of the unborn child and the pregnant mother.
With his family still in Canada, he has built up a little world for himself at this old house with sprawling grounds. He intends to fill a pond within the grounds with fish, and invite foreigners to fish here. He is hoping that his theories are accepted and studied upon. "I became a tool and presented it to the world. Now the world must recognise it."
