Sci-fi fashion

With technology and art crossing paths, this season sees new ideas, science, architecture and gadgetry, as an integral part of street fashion.

`MAN'S BEST friend' - is it a dog or is it science? In the shape of a dog, Sony's pet-like robot is the latest in hi-tech novelties. The behavioural patterns of the robot can be customised to meet the master's choice, thereby producing an answer.

Fascination with robotics and the mechanised does not stop here. This fascination with science hits the fashion calendar yet again. Few seasons ago we saw Hussein Chalayan create dresses made from separate pieces that slide on rails so that silhouettes (shape and hem length) could be modified.

This season sees new ideas that talk of science, architecture and gadgetry as an integral part of street fashion. The summerscape has "science on street." This summer uses technology to make art.

With technology and art of living crossing paths, the surreal potential of the machine comes to light. The machine - the object gains poetic momentum. Flavours of this urban poetry could be seen as accessories. Items from a scientist's kit take the form of earrings, ring clasps, pendants, armbands and bracelets. So, walk out of your physics class in style. Ball bearings hit the charts with a new spirit of freshness.

This season is all about miracles. With maxi floral prints screaming loud, technology intersects feminity in a new way. There exists a use of metallics to manufacture new images. Metal chips on hand bags, metal chain links on foot wear, loads of studs in new forms - all these ideas realise an alchemist's dream of combining contradictory properties in one unique substance.

Urban poetry scans a state of mind that reflects a new notion of space when designing a garment. Drawing inspiration from architectural forms around us, the structured look hits the streetscape. Well-formed sleeves, well-raised collar concepts, shaped French cuffs, knife pleat details, spaced and pin tucks all form a part of this narration. Effect of `volume-sans-volume' best describes this summer setting.

Small items in clothing can be juxtaposed to create interesting variations. Separate, elasticated sleeves on a cut sleeves T-Shirt, ruffled fabric to create sock indications, short asymmetric cut bolero over a spaghetti--all these ideas create a new summer look.

This season, fashion becomes a cross road between science, architecture and gadgetry. Machine becomes a symbol of an inseparable part of our everyday lives, art and fashion. Fashion is change. `Change' that offers a new approach to living. So, refresh your wardrobe with this new `sci-fi' understanding.
