Sharan Apparao brings an exclusive collection of Maheshwari saris, dupattas and yardage at an exhibition "Summer Colours" which opens this Friday at Fabindia.

THE 1500-YEAR-OLD Maheshwari sari spells exciting couture wear today, far removed from the staid finely bordered sari conceived by Rani Ahilya Bai Holkar in muted colours. Today's Maheshwari cottons and silk cottons are enchanting with their palette of colours ranging from jewel tones to soft pastels. The sensuous gossamer thin weaves have taken on designer formats stripes and geometric configurations. Woven by the women of the REHWA Weaver Society started by the erstwhile royal family of Holkars, Maheshwari saris now set the standards of design excellence in saris, yardage and curtain and cushion cover material and table mats.
Sharan Apparao brings a select collection of saris, dupattas and yardage at an exhibition of `Summer Colours' which opens this Friday at Fabindia, 3, Woods Road, Ilford House, off Mount Road. The soft silken feel of the saris with spectacular borders makes each of the exhibits a contemporary couture expression. Particularly pleasing are the colours. Even the brightest of Mughal reds and turquoise turn soft making them just apt for the season. The woven contrasts carry the magic of summer tones too; mango yellow body striped leaf green; white `butties' in powder blue or strong striped pallav and border lift the dupatta and sari to designer class. The yardage for salwar kurta ensembles, or summer tops and kurtas come in shades of pink, beige, off-white and orange.
`Summer Colours' will be on at Fabindia from May 16 to 18.
