IF YOU have classic Western tastes and are looking for furniture that matches your taste, then you must head towards Works of Heaven.
Housed in Church Street, this store, which is a branch of a Delhi-based company with the same name, sells replicas of Western masterpieces. These are recreations of masterpieces from Italy, London, and so on which are mass produced and sold to their various dealers across the world. (Warning: If you have traditional tastes, do not venture in to the store). There are consoles, carved Italian lamps, and various figurines. One look at them and you know that this is the kind of furniture that you often get to see in films screened on HBO or Star movies.
Anamika Bajaj who runs started the store, says: "Every piece has a story and some history associated with it. As I have just started the store, I too am learning about these products."
Seeing the designs and the price tags, one is sure that people do spend a fortune to do up their homes. The best part about the furniture at Works of Heaven is that they are "maintenance free". These are made from poly marble, chemical resins, and marble chips, and can be used indoors or outdoors. The material is "the best alternative to wood", explains Ms. Bajaj. If this kind of furniture does catch up then we can look forward to saving some trees. This apart the store has figurines with various concepts such as sports, music, and so on. So, you can find a golfer and a caddie, a musician and several musical instruments in various sizes. These figurines have multi-uses. They come as corner pieces, lamps or side tables. The same themes are used for centre tables as well. These pieces are priced at Rs.13,550.
To cater to the typical Indian tastes the store offers a few designs with the Mughal theme. Here there are chirag lamps with antique finish, consoles with intricate Mughal designs, and dancing peacocks as mirror stand.
Then there are what look like miniature models, but Ms. Bajaj calls them "ornamental paintings", which are once again theme based. For instance, the one based on a motorcycle has a miniature helmet, shoes, jacket, etc., similarly, a ship on sail has a miniature boat, lifeguard, anchor, and so on.
There are fountains (Rs. 4,500 and Rs. 27,000), Italian couple Rs. 3,850, and plenty of angels. The dining sets are unique, in that, the glass tops are delicately placed on the slender shoulders of angles or fairies. The chairs come in the designs of fish, seashells, and so on. There are also Titanic chairs, which have the story of the doomed ship written on them.
The shop is open between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sundays.
