MY FAVOURITES
SaReGaMa, Rs.120
THIS ALBUM comes packaged as "the timeless music of Jagjit Singh". It is not wrong. Most of the ghazals rendered by Jagjit and Chitra Singh duo would pass muster at the end of their career. We have heard them all in one album or the other in the past. Yet, the fact that such gems like "Main Bhool Jaoon" and "Aye Khuda Ret Ke Sehre Ko" have been brought together enhances the appeal of this twin-cassette album with 22 ghazals. Interestingly, there is one ghazal with Lata Mangeshkar too. "Mili Hawaon Mein Udne ki Woh Saza Yaaron" is as soothing as Lata has ever got in ghazals.
This one is for die-hard Jagjit fans and has value for those who want all their favourites together in one presentation. The novelty is in the presentation.
ROM ROM VICH TU
Music Today, Rs.48
SUNG BY veteran Barkat Sidhu, this album is another of Music Today's offerings in the Sufi genre of music which is gaining popularity not only for the philosophical lyrics which have so much relevance in a world of polarities and violence, but for the soul-stirring yet simple and often folky style of singing. "Rom Rom Vich Tu" contains an assortment of compositions, such as "Rabba Mere Haal Da Mehram Tu" by Shah Hussain, "Hatthi Tirkh Pai Mere Charkhe Di" by Bullehshah and Jamaluddin Aulia's "Hun Nai Hatda Ni Mai, Ranjhe Di Tarfon Khayal" based on the popular folk epic of Heer-Ranjha. With an emphasis on retaining the flavour of Punjabi folk music with instruments like rabab and flute and minimal use of orchestration, this is definitely worth the price for those in search of uplifting musical moments.
KAISE KAHOON KE... PYAAR HAI
Crescendo, Rs.50
HERE COMES an album that is worth picking up, worth using the rewind button more than once. It may not be "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" revisited but the lead number here is worth listening when driving down to work, when alone at home, when in a party. Need we say more about "Kaise Kahoon Ke Pyaar Hai" song rendered by Kavita Krishnamurty and Udit Narayan. Sameer's lyrics are par for the course.
Go beyond this soulful romantic number and you will find music Viju Sha has tried hard but has not been able to recreate the magic in other songs. Not to say that they are not good enough but somehow lose out in sheen in comparison to the title song. Mercifully, it comes twice, once on both sides.
BHOOT
T-Series, Rs.50
AMBIENCE CREATED through drum beats, whistles, tinkles and much more, all nine songs, four and five on sides A and B, respectively, can only make you think, are these songs or a poem reading session in a class? Yet Sunidhi Chauhan, Vijay Prakash and Salim Merchant who sing title song, penned by Lalit Marathe, while Salim-Sultana duo score the music, is catching up among the kids!
Ramgopal Varma has done his bit to bring the ghost effect into the songs. So buy the cassette just in case you want to create an ambience to scare kids. Or just in case they love playing bhoot, bhoot! The saving grace of the cassette is however, melancholic "Yeh Sard" song sung by Gayatri Iyer, which is quite hummable.
ISHQ VISHK
Tips, Rs.42
THE ALISHA Chinai magic has not waned a bit, yet. Or may be Anu Malik knows how to extract the best out of her. Hence, "Chot Dil Pe Lagi" sung by her and Kumar Sanu is the best of the lot and is already up in hit song chart. It is foot-tapping and hummable. While Kapoor in "Aisa Kyon Hota Hai Bar Bar" sung by Alka Yagnik attempts to incorporate charisma of good old music, successfully. Others are funky, just passable.
