Assembly line production

ACTION HEROES: Alex Scott (Owen Wilson) does some sharp shooting as Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy) watches.

I Spy (ENGLISH)

Cast: Eddie Murphy, Owen Wilson, Famke Janssen

Dir: Betty Thomas

WATCHING THIS film is in word plain excruciating. Eddie Murphy became a motor mouth superstar almost 20 years ago in 48 Hours. Now his constant chatter is nerve wracking. It is tiring you wish he would stop to take a breath as you feel out of breath just listening to him. Owen Wilson is cute and his broken nose is just cho chweet but it is not enough to lift the film to watchable category.

And the film is supposed to be a comedy right? So then what is the need for saving the world and brainless action sequences? The film has an assembly line feel to it - everything slapped together to serve up unappetising fare.

Films inspired by television shows work wonderfully if you have Brian De Palma at the helm. For then you get the super cool Mission Impossible. If, however, you hope to ride piggyback on the popularity of your stars and the show and bring nothing at all to the film, then you are bound to fail.

The story has Alex Scott, a secret agent who teams with Kelly Robinson (who refers to himself as Kelly Robinson), a middleweight champion to recover the Switchblade, latest most technologically sophisticated reconnaissance aircraft from the USA.

The Switchblade has been pinched by wicked Arnold Gundars, who plans to sell it to wicked people who can use it to transport weapons of mass destruction and take over the world. The auction is going to take place at this championship bout Gundars is hosting between Robinson and the reigning European titleholder.

While Scott teaches Robinson a thing or two about being a super spy, Robinson returns the favour by teaching Scott how to make a hit with Rachel, an agent who Scott has a crush on forever.

The film is uninspiring and cliché ridden. The laughs are few and far between. Eddie Murphy plays his movie persona once more as Kelly Robinson and there is reason enough to believe he needs to do some serious rethinking on Eddie Murphy the movie star. Owen Wilson as Scott as mentioned earlier is cute as a button while Famke Janssen as Rachel has just to look competent and mysterious by turn, which she does.

The film offers nothing - no laughs, no thrills and no reason to drag yourself from telly and cricket.
