All in the family
FOR NINE-YEAR-OLD Kalidas, his role model is his dad, actor Jayaram. Three years back, Jayaram took him for a holiday to Goa, which enabled him to do a role in "Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal", a film for which he bagged a National Award for the Best Child Artist in 2000.
Since then, the boy was bitten by the acting bug, while Papa Jayaram wanted him to become a doctor.
Last year, noted director Sibi Malayil had approached Jayaram with a script in which the central character was an eight-year-old boy. Sibi wanted Kalidas to do the role and the boy was excited about it.
But Jayaram and wife Parvathi, former actress, were initially reluctant, as they told him that the school would not grant him leave.
But Kalidas, a fourth standard student at the Padma Seshadri School, K. K. Nagar, told his teacher that it was a great role, which would fetch him one more National Award. Thus the little boy was able to convince his teachers who agreed to grant him leave for a week to act in the film. Said a beaming Kalidas:
"The producer, Sibi uncle and `appa' who plays my father in the film then went ahead and completed the shoot coinciding with my Pongal holidays plus the one week allotted to me from school."
Remarked Jayaram the proud father: "Even I was amazed by his performance in the film.
However we have made it clear to him that acting will take a back seat until he finishes college!" The film titled "Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum" will be released for Vishu (April 14) in Kerala.
