HAS BOLLYWOOD run out of ideas? Last year's great invention the urban Hinglish (Hindi- English) movies are going bust, as "Freaky Chakra", "Let's Talk" and "Bus Yun Hi" have sunk without a trace. Now the very same critics who used to rave about a "Hyderabad Blues" or "Everybody Says I'm Fine" are blasting these filmmakers, saying that their films have "incoherent plots and are amateurishly directed".
The audience for such films have dwindled and last Saturday saw a posh multiplex in Ahmedabad cancel its evening show, as not even a single person came to see the film! Still there are a dozen more such Hinglish films, which are getting ready for release, though the craze has died down.
More alarming is the satellite channels which used to feed on these films have suddenly decided to go slow in procuring Hinglish titles, as Television advertisers are refusing to buy slots during the telecast of these films.
The best bet these days, according to Bollywood trade pundits, is thrillers, after last year's hits such as "Raaz", "Humraaz", "Deewangee" and this year's only hit "Jism". So Bollywood directors are in search of DVDs of Hollywood whodunits as all recent hits have been carbon copies of the English originals.
