Akshay plays villain

AFTER HAVING won the first award of his life for his negative role in Abbas-Mustan's `Ajnabee', Akshay Kumar has gone back to exploring the virtue of vice. "I've just signed a film called `Akhand' with Marathi director Satish Rajwade. I play the negative role of a jailor during British India." The director, whose earlier Marathi film `Mujhad' won a large number of awards, is stepping into Hindi films. Says Akshay, "What attracted me to the negative role is its dynamism. It isn't an ordinary villain's role. The character goes through numerous shades of emotions . I've never played such a role before. It's also a special challenge to me because I've never done a period film before."

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation has accused Akshay of promoting smoking. Says Akshay, "They haven't done their homework. Because I don't smoke. I don't even drink tea or coffee, let alone smoke cigarettes. I'm exceedingly health conscious. I don't understand why they named me without verifying the facts. I'd never do anything to mess around with my health. The kind of lifestyle that we lead, we need to take more care of ourselves than ever before. To me, looking after myself is more important than anything else. I don't want my life or career to go up in smoke."
