Getting the picture right

Aspiring to be a photographer? `Ambitions 4 Photography' at Nungambakkam helps students learn the art through its six-month course.

IF YOUR aim is to become a photographer, then `Ambitions 4 Photography' is the place for you.

Situated in Nungambakkam, the academy imparts practical training in photography and instils professional confidence in budding photographers.

Says K. L Raja Ponsing, founder director of the academy, "Our main aim is to help students understand the concepts of photography and trigger their imagination and creativity."

A self-taught photographer, Ponsing worked in a bank for 13 years before setting up this academy in the year 2001. "My stint at the bank was more of an accident, as my immediate priority after college was to get a job." In fact even during his tenure in the bank, Ponsing used to freelance for magazines and advertisers. Soon he realised there was a dearth of institutes offering photography courses in the city and this gave birth to his academy.

Through its six months `Practical Photography' certificate course, the students are taught how to look at a subject or scene and conceive it photographically.

The course curriculum, primarily aimed at beginners, hobbyists, amateur and professional photographers, is divided into two levels, namely `Basics of Photography' and `Advanced Professional Photography', of three-month duration each. The fees are Rs. 8,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.

There will be a detailed classroom session with state-of-the-art teaching aids like multimedia visual presentation. "Seventy per cent of the course time is allocated for practical training and projects," says Ponsing.

Apart from the regular practical and theory classes, the students are given opportunities to participate in real time photography assignments involving fashion, industrial, advertising and digital photography.

They are also expected to submit projects based on various themes at the end of the course.

"More than the certificate it is the project work, which actually shows whether a student is really interested in photography. After all, a good photograph is a combination of your interest, effort, attitude and hard work," says Ponsing.

To mark two years of its existence, the academy is planning to conduct a photography event — `Ambitions 4 in Focus-2003', involving events such as a photography exhibition, on the spot photo competition, caption contest, launching of a photography club and website at the Lalit Kala Academy in the second week of June.

For further information, the academy can be contacted at 56, (Old No.109), first floor, Ramanaiken Street, (Behind Nungambakkam police station) Ph: 28217693, 28217546.
