Mahesh Bhupathi has lots of plans up his sleeve to introduce tennis among the young.
FROM BEING an inspiration to the young, winning laurels as the country's numero uno men's doubles team with Leander Paes, to the charmer who broke many hearts tying the knot with the beautiful Shweta Jaishanker, Mahesh Bhupathi has been equally prominent on the sports pages as well as page three. Now into sports promotion and event management, Bhupathi was here as President and CEO Globosport - a professional sport management and marketing company, bringing the WTA Indian Open 2003 to the city. "Globosport would be promoting other games as well. We wanted to get world tennis to Hyderabad, thus the WTA Indian Open 2003," he says.
About the Leander-Bhupathi split. "We were not going ahead professionally and the decision was mutual. But then we would be playing together at the Davis Cup," he says. Winner of seven Grand Slam titles, holder of the world No. 1 spot in men's doubles with Leander Paes and the current No.4 in the world in men's doubles, Bhupathi looks forward to the forthcoming tournaments. Apart from Globosport, Mahesh, with father Krishna Bhupathi, is focussed on developing tennis amongst the young. He also wants to create opportunities for talented young players through the Nike and Nutrine Junior Tour conducted in partnership with the All India Tennis Federation.
Bhupathi is also concentrating on the Nike-Bhupathi Tennis Village near Bangalore. "We would be shortly having a branch in Hyderabad,"he says.
Having received the Padma Shri in 2001, with a promising career ahead and drive to bring a sports culture into the country, he sure has aces to offer in the years to come.
