The eco-friendly science

The sale of Feng shui articles is on the rise indicating a huge following for this ancient Chinese science in our country. Hyderabad boasts of many experts who assist `solving problems' through Feng shui, writes PADMINI B. PATELL

POSITIVE ENERGY: Feng Shui articles are symbols to be understood and assimilated.

UNTIL TWO years ago wind chimes were brought back as souvenirs from overseas trips and dragons and turtles were alien to Indian culture. Today every gift and novelty shop is stacked with these articles to cater to recent demand. This demand has steadily risen with the increased awareness of the ancient Chinese science of Feng Shui - which is based on Geomancy or placement of articles.

Feng Shui literally means Winds and Waters, which are considered as mediators between heaven and earth. Every living and non-living thing is said to emit an invisible electromagnetic energy called `chi' referred to as `ki' in Japan and `prana' in India. The integration of the outside world with internal environment is the cornerstone of most traditional philosophies. The end result is creating balanced, peaceful dwellings whose occupants develop health and happiness.

Acharya Sanjaya Kumar of Cosmic Paradise turned to traditional Vasthu when things went haywire in his business. He soon found that in modern times the rigidity of Vasthu posed several limitations. After an in-depth study he found solutions in Feng Shui. Seven years of consultancy has thrown up many a challenge and the success stories are numerous both in India and abroad. "Feng Shui is a logical science which is meant to enable man to live in perfect harmony with his environment. In the course of Chinese accupressure and acupuncture treatment patients were advised to implement Feng Shui so as to complement the physical cures. It works on some basic principles of which Cleaning the Clutter is fundamental and most essential. Unwanted, unused and unkept articles produce negative energies thus more the clutter, less the positive energy available for the occupants of that space. Followed by existing fixture being rearranged according to certain attributes in specific directions. Space thus created has to be cleansed of negativity. Depending on the nature of the problem various article are placed. Feng Shui articles are primarily symbols, which have to be understood, and this understanding has to percolate into the belief system of the concerned people, before they can expect any positive changes. Articles are like jewellery; the last to be added for that much more enhancement. But misguided and in haste for instant results people go overboard making article purchases and often wonder why the magic passed them by. Feng Shui assists in problem solving not in problem eradication.''

Acharya Sanjaya specialises in Feng Shui corrections and healing besides offering a Basic Certificate Course twice annually. (He can be contacted at paradise4uinu@yahoo.com or on 55581666 / 56521050.)

The importance of the elements of water, wind, fire, earth and metal are common to most cultures. These five have both a productive and destructive sequence. Placing articles in the productive sequence ensures that man is in harmony with Mother Nature. For Padma Raghunath Rao, a middle-aged housewife the results of Feng Shui caught her attention. With a basic course she first experimented with her own home. Now two years and many hours of study later she advises her relatives and friends. "This is a proven science and I have always found significant improvements. The `kartha' or breadwinner of the family is categorised as either an East or West person and accordingly Feng Shui articles are placed in particular positions to compensate any element imbalances he may have. To begin with people need to have an open mind and then any aspect be it health, business, relationships etc can be bettered.''

Website like www.wofs.com and books by Feng Shui authority Lillian Too are easily available and give a fairly good insight into this subject. Uma Nagarajan gained most of her knowledge from books by Nitin Parakh. She decided to begin with the basic three - the laughing Buddha, Chinese coins and the three-legged frog. She confided, "almost immediately I felt a sense of harmony in my home and my husband's career saw a marked growth. I constantly keep a tab on the new Feng Shui articles that come into the market and in my opinion these articles make the most personalised gifts. I often present them to my close friends so that they may also enjoy its benefits.''

Madhusudan who was a dealer in gift items could not help but notice the growing demand for Feng Shui articles. Presently he is not just a wholesaler but has also gained knowledge about the science on the job. "Feng Shui has become popular because it is suitable to modern lifestyle, it is affordable, easy to implement, totally result oriented and has no harmful side effects. Most of my articles are made out of fibre, ceramic, wood or metal and not the commonly used plaster of Paris, which breaks easily. I believe articles must be within everyone's reach, hence I stock articles from Rs.50 onwards.'' Currently he is holding an exhibition at Room No. 215 Satguru Complex, Basheer Bagh and has a permanent outlet Feng Shui World at Sultan Bazar, Phone 55695493, 55825493. Majority of the customers these days seem to be aware that a laughing Buddha signifies happiness and wealth, that the turtle is associated with longevity, that wind chimes and Om bells resound good vibrations and that bamboo brings growth and good luck.

Chhayaa Negandhi is a Pranic Healing Consultant who was invited to speak at the World Congress on Health Science and Alternative Medicines held at Kolkata in March this year. Having learnt Pranic Feng Shui from Grand Master Choa Kok Sui three years ago she has been successful in helping several people locally and has many clients from other cities. "On studying a residence or office I am able to identify the negative and positive energies. I reduce negative energies by rearranging, sometimes removing and enhance positive energies by appropriate placement of household articles and if required add on Feng Shui articles. It is important to have these articles energised in a proper manner for maximum gains. I have benefited personally from Feng Shui and I feel a great satisfaction in making the slightest contribution to other individuals.'' Negandhi consults as well as stocks Feng Shui articles and can answer queries at crnegandhi@rediffmail.com or on 7849892.

Astro-Feng Shui is considered as the authentic Classical Feng Shui, which involves calculations, observations and formulae. It is known as Xuang Kong or Flying Star, which states that, if aligning and tapping of the right type of `Qi' (energy) is done correctly, one does not need to decorate the home. The secret is often in the location and direction of the main door. A detailed study is made of the building and subtle element cures are provided. Leela Shah is a Master of Flying Star Feng Shui and is available for consultation on phone 323 2007.

Before dismissing Feng Shui as yet another mystifying superstition, take a closer look. This could be your second chance with wealth, health and prosperity. Ayn Rand was in tune with this ancient science when she wrote in her famed book The Fountainhead "Man's character is the product of his premises.'' If the Chinese and Japanese are seen as a flourishing society, people with a passionate drive for being a step ahead, a pace faster, a rung higher, perhaps Feng Shui, a science they have so effortlessly incorporated in all areas of their lives, holds the key to their success!
