Cheer with carols
CHRISTMAS IS round the corner and this year, the season began with a grand performance of carols. With more than 40 choristers and a 15-member orchestra, the Chennai Philharmonic Ensemble performed at the Music Academy recently, singing familiar carols. The concert began with "O come all ye faithful". Seemed as if the choristers were a little too conscious of the occasion, for they kept skipping a few notes and straying a bit. However, they were back on track in the second number, "Sing choirs of angel". But the single mike marred the sound. The audience could only hear one soprano, who had the mike close to her. The Nativity of Christ, sung with passion, reflected the true spirit of the occasion. The sublimity and elegance of Western classical music was brought out by the orchestra, who played several shorter pieces by different composers. But, disappointment awaited the audience, as the choir joined the orchestra for the grandest composition of all, Mozart's "Gloria in Excelsis". Though the orchestra played it again on request, the choir struggled to get same effect.
The concert was rounded off with another memorable number, "Silent night".
The Chennai Philharmonic Ensemble did try out some difficult pieces. Looks like conductor Gnani needs to work a little more on preparing the choir well for the next performance. However, this being their first major concert, they did quite well.
