Spotlight on young talent
Young dancers and musicians infused life into Soorya's recent show in the city.
`PARAMPARA', A dance and music festival held in the city by Soorya as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, showcased up-and-coming talent.
Disciples of such veterans as Padma Subramaniam, Balamuralikrishna, Sudharani Raghupathy, Chitra Vishweshwaran, Kanak Rele and the Dhananjayans were featured.
Twelve-year-old Julian Clef presented a piano recital of sonatas by renowned composers such as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Claude Debussy, Beethoven and Franz Liszt. A rendition of Tschaikovsky's Walt of flowers, Edward Greig's March of the dwarfs and Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Music (Small- Night Music) was commendable.
Navya Natarajan from Bangalore, a disciple of Padmini Ramachandran, presented a varnam, Swamiazhaithodi vaa sakhi, in praise of Lord Nataraja. She depicted the pangs of separation of a virahothkhantitha nayika who beseeches her sakhi "to go and bring my Lord". "The radiance of the moon makes me long for him," the heroine adds.
The piece, which is based on nine ragas and adi tala, has been culled from `Adalisaiamutham' and has been set to tune by K. N. Dandayudhapaani Pillai.
A padam in Shanmughapriya, Vilayada ithu nerama, was also presented.
This composition by Papanasam Sivan narrates the story of Avvaiyar, a devotee of Lord Muruga, who yearns to surrender at the feet of the divine Lord and is granted moksha. Navya's grip over footwork was noteworthy, as were the graceful movements of her hands and convincing abhinaya, as she portrayed an aged Avvaiyar. She concluded the performance with a tillana. Deepthi Bharatiyan and Shafiquddin, disciples of the Dhananjayans, performed `Bhoomanjali', an invocation to Bhoomi Devi, and this was followed by a `Nrityopaharam'. Deepthi danced to an ashtapadi (Darbari Kanada).
This slow and expressive piece depicted the plight of Radha as narrated by her friend to Lord Krishna: "O Krishna, your beloved pines for you."
The next piece was a Tamil padam on Shiva's tandava. Both Deepthi and Shafiquddin were an epitome of grace and they performed each piece with a fluidity that reflected their hard work and talent.
Mohiniyattom danseuse Sunanda Nair, disciple of Kanak Rele, presented `Ananda Ganapathy', which she has choreographed herself. `Ananda Ganapathy'depicts the dancing of a joyous Ganapathy, who has imbibed lasya from his mother and thandava from his father.
The dancer then interpreted `Khupja', a beautiful poem by Oriya writer, Sitakant Mohapatra. It has been translated into Malayalam by Ayyappa Panicker and set to music by Kavalam Narayana Panicker.
The choreography was by Kanak Rele.
The poem, Ghanashyama Krishna, kaathu kaathu ninnu njaan, narrates how Khupja, a devotee of Lord Krishna attains moksha.
She made an impression with innovative and eloquent gestures. A Swati Tirunal padam, presented next, depicted a pragalbha nayika who tried to "convince her Lord not to be dejected, but to unite with her and enjoy the moments".
She presented an ashtapadi depicting Radha's love for Krishna. Unable to bear the pangs of separation, Radha implores her sakhi to find Krishna.
`Jeeva' (Mohanam), another piece, spoke of the soul of the dancer merging with the ultimate aesthetics of dance.
The show by Sajna Sudheer, Kalpana and Karthika Gopan, disciples of Mydhili, brought the curtain down on `Parampara'.
A solo by Sajna was followed by a duet, `Arthanaarishwara', by the sisters, Kalpana and Karthika. Based on raga Kumudapriya and set to rupaka tala, the dance was choreographed by Mydhili.
The duo also performed a varnam, Aadum mayil, on Lord Muruga.
