Desi date with the modern
Bombay Store: freedom to shop
IT IS both a fashion and a home store with plenty of non-branded goods and that is its specialty.
The shop's collection reflects the swadeshi and the modern concept. Whether you are looking for home decorative articles or fashion accessories, Bombay Store, M.G. Road, offers a wide range.
As you step in to the store, Balagangadhar Tilak's photo greets you: the store is inspired by "the swadeshi concept of the freedom fighter".
The store is a branch of the Mumbai-based Bombay Swadeshi Co-operative Stores, started on December 15, 1905, by Dadabhai Naoroji, and conceived by Manmohandas Ramji and Tilak.
"We have extended the store to the contemporary lifestyle, blending both the traditional and modern," explains Managing Director Asim Dalal. Continuing with the values laid by its founders, the store procures quality goods including artefacts, gift articles, herbs, and spices from specialty locations of India.
Another speciality here is its alluring display of products and its pleasant ambience. Housed in the EGK Prestige building, the store is spread over five floors, with each floor exhibiting specific goods. The store, which plans to open more branches in the country, has a vast array of contemporary merchandise including aesthetic crafts and apparel. "Our service is on par with any international store. We take personal care of our customers. While shopping at our store, not once will shoppers get the feeling that they are being watched, followed, or hounded by our salespersons. At the same time, our salespersons are just a glance away, and volunteer only when they are needed," says Mr. Dalal.
Another delight is the gifts and artefacts section, that is packed with a range of fragrant pot pourri, handmade candles with pressed flowers embedded in them, carved figurines, statuettes in various media, wall hangings, silk paintings, lamps and shades, dainty and colourful crockery, and other knick knacks. You can take your pick from an array of leather goods, home furnishings, jewellery, aromatic herbs, spices, aromatherapy oils, exotic salves, and fragrant candles. Children too have a wide choice of trendy clothes and lovely toys here. For connoisseurs of literature, there is a bookshop as well. In its jewellery section, on the ground floor, one can also choose from a choice of fashion jewellery made in terracotta.
But why open The Bombay Store in Bangalore? "We decided to open the store here because Bangalore today is one of the most vibrant, fashion conscious, and trendy cities in India.
It also attracts a lot of domestic and international leisure tourists and IT traffic," comes the reply.
Feeling the pulse of cosmopolitan consumers in the City, the store has begun to hold colourful events on its premises such as the recently conducted chef show. It has extended an inhouse and outdoor café on its premises in association with Café Coffee Day, and plans to start a multicuisine restaurant shortly.
Bombay Store is open all through the year. It can be contacted on 5320014/15.
