Suffah, so fine
Stylish upholstery for your home
"SOFA IS derived from the Arabic word `suffah' which means cushion," says a placard, positioned at the entrance of one of Bangalore's more recent offerings to the burgeoning lifestyle furniture market. Designo claims to be India's largest exclusive leather furniture showroom with a sprawling 8,000-sq. ft. interior.
The store was inaugurated in February last by the flamboyant Vijay Mallya. "We have expanded our store and added accessories to complement our range of furniture. Now we can lend a whole new look to your living room with throw rugs, tables, Tiffany lamps, art glass panels," says Maruthi Rao, the man behind the show.
But why the curious name? "Designo means design is no issue," explains the articulate Mr. Rao. "We can design according to your whim. We are flexible." He is particularly proud of the company's skill at custom-styling furniture. "We have over 250 designs and 50 colours, if you have an idea, just bring it over and we will make it for you," he finishes with a flourish.
As I sink comfortably into the Valentino sofa set, with encouragement from the enthusiastic staff, I am drawn to the regal Godfather chair. The scene-stealer is really the recliner, a rage in the West, appropriate for all you movie-buffs with home theatre systems. Bar stools in wood and metal, chesters, bean bags, floor cushions, club chairs, puffees... You can have your pick here. Designo also offers the famed "distress" leather for those who want a vintage touch.
So, whether you love the smooth Pilbroch, the sensible North American Classic, or are seduced by the Swedish Montana, Designo can provide them all for you. Even if you are not a leather aficionado, this store surely is worth a visit.
Sunil Suresh of Stanley Seating (a company that imports leather to India from the world over), also a supplier for Designo, avers that public awareness about leather has gone up by nearly 100 per cent in the recent past. He insists that the furniture market may well be in its infancy, but is poised for great growth. Although the initial demand for leather came from the Indian automobile sector, for car seats, there is now a marked increase in demand from the indigenous furniture market. "Genuine leather has pores and it breathes. People who live in style will vouch for the fact that it is indeed a beautiful and timeless upholstery alternative," he declares.
While a recliner at Designo costs Rs. 35, 000, the prices of sofa sets vary according to the quality of leather used, Rs. 70,000 upward. Tiffany lamps cost Rs. 6,000 upwards and the Jindal art glass panels are priced Rs. 20,000 upwards.
