Heralding haute couture

A breathtaking fashion show heralded the entry of Satya Paul with an exclusive outlet in the twin cities haute couture market. Check out the MPM Mall for the designer and pręt lines displayed at the show.

"THE MODERN Indian woman cannot be typecast any more. There are so many aspects to her life, such as traditional occasions when she chooses to be ethnic, cocktail evenings when she sports the western look or the salwar kameez to maintain the dignity of the work place. As a designer it is essential to reach out to all these aspects of her life," says Puneet Nanda, director design, Satya Paul at the breath-taking fashion show held at ITC Hotel Grand Kakatiya heralding the brands' presence in the twin cities, with the Music of Colours - the Satya Paul Fall Winter 2002-03 Collection. Silhouettes for the present day women, about 60 creations were displayed at an impressive show choreographed by fashion guru Prasad Bidappa.

Slick and sans commentary, the ensemble said it all - Satya Paul the premium designer brand and U by Satya Paul for the pręt line. A graffiti of floral and linear patterns, rusty patinas of copper, silver and bronze, textured fabric embellished with semi-precious stones, it was couture inspired by music, paintings, sculpture, trees, rain and existence itself cutting across ghagras, saris, salwar kameez, Indo-westerns and western formals. "It is vibrant, especially the juxtaposition of colours that involves risk taking," says city-based designer Zubin Vakil about the ensemble. On a bolder note it was the wrap-around pants, sensual and worn with a colourful top in winter hues, as also the nine yards wonder redefined with the hood and cowl neck. "Fashion has to evolve. A sixteen-year-old would be looking at having pop art on her sari," says Puneet, involved in couture with father Satya Paul since the past 17 years.

A mix of creative and practical and overall a functional collection, said the glitterati present at the show. " The sequins, embroidery and colours are good especially for the Absolute Colour and Bronze Maalkauns," says Ranjana Agarwal about the collection. "We have been getting enquiries about the lines," says Shruti Malpani, from the Satya Paul exclusive outlet in the twin cities at MPM Mall, and that the extensive range comprising saris, fabrics, scarves, accessories and the ensemble displayed at the ramp as well would be available at the store (Tel: 6786789/ 98851-88011).

The stores have been personalised to make them representative of the market in terms of styles, colours and fabrics used. "For instance, New Delhi has severe winters thus we work with suitable fabric," says Sanjay Kapoor, director marketing &finance Genesis Colors Private Limited, committed to distributing and marketing the brand of designer wear with a network of stores to retail new lines off the designer board.

The Satya Paul exclusive outlet for the twin cities at MPM Mall is the first destination in the brands' southern expansion. "Satya Paul was already there in the twin cities but it has come in a big way now as an exclusive outlet. Lifestyle counts for the vibrancy of any city and the city has it all - you have many parties happening in the twin cities. And Satya Paul is about lifestyle clothing," says Girish Malpani of MPM Mall.

A fashion guide for the soirees, a benchmark for the budding designers at fashion schools here and a model of the professional ramp, were the other inspiring lessons at the fashion party.
