Endless festivities, limitless joys

Tired of pizzas? Want a change from pasta? Go across to Radisson Hotel's Italianni restaurant with MADHUR TANKHA for an Italian bite, the Roman kind... .

WHEN IN Rome do as the Romans do. At least do so at Radisson Hotel's Italianni restaurant Hotel in New Delhi, where Ravioli and Risotto festivals continue till the end of this month. But the Indian palate may not click with authentic Italian cuisine. This American chain of hotel earns maximum lucre from its food and wine. Besides the floating aroma of garlic and herbs the décor and fountain make the ambience perfect for a rendezvous.

Our dishes aren't laced with so much cheese and cooking wine as the Mediterranean dishes. Further, we cannot resist mutton cooked with spices. Here, Italianni has made slight alterations by cooking mutton suitable to our taste buds. Ravioli's are stuffed pastas. Chef Akhil Sahni, an alumnus of Indian Hotel Management, Mumbai, informs us that raviolis are stuffed with three vegetarian and three non-vegetarian fillings. He says, "Ravioli contains egg yolk and they are prepared in dough machines, where they come out like bed sheets. Then we make tiffin-like shapes out of them." One tastes Crabmeat Ravioli, priced at a staggering Rs. 495 and find the taste peculiar but likeable. A glass of pineapple juice will go with the dish. The meat of the crab is mixed with oil, basil and pepper corns. To add aroma, taste and flavour to their dishes special varieties of Italian cooking wine are poured into all dishes.

One tries a piece of Artichoke Ravioli -- priced at Rs. 425 - and finds the taste amusing. They are eaten with cheese dip, made from cream cheese and Parmesan, which is extra filling. Chicken Ravioli are priced at Rs. 445, cabbage and leek ravioli are available at Rs. 345.

We may be accustomed to eating Khichri but not the Italians, who relish eating Risotto -- rice -- with green peas, mixed herbs, mushrooms, seafood and of course plenty of cheese. Lemon juice, garlic, herbs and wine are added to this dish to make the dish tastier. It is considered low calorie stuff. Seafood Risotto priced at Rs. 495, Risotto with Lamb Shanks at Rs. 425. If you are a vegetarian then Mixed Herbs and Cheese Risotto, priced at Rs. 345, Green Peas and Saffron Risotto, at Rs. 395 are available.

This 128-cover restaurant has the basic ingredients like tomatoes flown all the way from Italy.
