Celebration of colour
The mood in Chennai fashion circles is upbeat with the launch of an exclusive Satya Paul store on Khader Nawaz Khan Road.
At last, the tide has turned. To wannabe hot and happening Chennai. Ace designers from across the country are in haute pursuit of this city of contrast. Where tradition thrives with modernity. On the one side, it's the pattu-clad celebration of the Navarathiri festivities. On the other, it's a spirited time at the burgeoning pubs in lingerie-inspired Western couture.
And now, the latest buzz in fashion biz is the launch of the Satya Paul store on Khader Nawaz Khan Road. "Clothing for the individual, intelligent, beautiful, sensitive and desiring woman of today... " that's Paul for you. With an appealing line of saris, salwars, separates and stoles, the design house is all set to make an impact in the Chennai fashion scene.
So what is it that makes the Satya Paul label distinct? "Colour" is Puneet Nanda's emphatic reply. As Director of Design and son of the style guru, Puneet has been actively involved with fashion for about two decades. "With an imaginative use of colour, you can even make an ordinary creation look dramatic. Such is its power." And true, as one goes through the snazzy display at the showroom, it's obvious that Paul isn't shy of using colour. Visually stimulating lollipop shades vie for attention with beautiful burgundy. And it's precisely this use of colour that packs a modern punch into the creations.
As for the designs, be it the sari or the coordinated salwar fabrics, the accent is on prints and paints. Traditional block prints are given a facelift with contemporary colour schemes. "It's time to move forward... with tradition," adds Puneet. "And a lot of emphasis has been given to the draping. So obviously, the fabrics are rich and sensual. The saris and salwars come in free-flowing satin, crepes, georgettes, blends etc."
"U by Satya Paul" which focusses on silhouettes and fabrics that are affordable will also be part of the collection at the store shortly. "This is a pręt line that includes Indian, fusion and Western couture. There are plenty of options here to create your own style," discloses Puneet.
Upbeat, fresh, with a touch of retro... that's the essence of the line. And yes... it's certainly a wearable version of the more challenging catwalk looks that are often prohibitively priced and designed for sculpted bodies and extravagant lifestyles (the range starts at Rs. 600 and goes up to Rs. 40,000).
To coincide with the launch of the store, a mega fashion show has been organised this evening at ITC Hotel Park Sheraton. A glam slam of sorts, the event will mark the unveiling of Satya Paul's Fall/Winter 2002-03 Collection with an innovative musical ensemble by Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman.
The Satya Paul label comes from the house of Genesis Colours and Suchitra Reddy represents it in the South. For details contact 8211205/ 98410 61030.
